An Olympic runner Sudan has requested political asylum in the UK.
A British government official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press confirmed the request for asylum.
The man's name was not revealed, but officials said he was competing as a corridor of 800 meters.
The Olympic men arrived Tuesday night at the Bridewell police station near the northern city of Leeds English. Several countries have training camps in the area, including Chinese.
The International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge said Friday that he knew of an application for asylum, but they had not independently verified the details.
"I know that there was a request, but I do not know the government's decision," said Rogge.
A spokesman for the Interior Ministry refused to comment.
Applications for asylum can take months to decide. Meanwhile, applicants may be detained in custody.
